Verizon Releases Sniffer Apps – Locate Your Smartphone Anywhere Anytime

Verizon has followed the same old track as that of Apple’s iPhone. The carrier has launched its new application that helps you to track down your smartphone. I guess, thieves are going to have a hard time in trying to keep their new possessions a secret.

For now, the application is available for Blackberry and Android handsets in the market. It’s free and has some really nice packages. Of course, the company is charging a flat $10 on monthly basis because it is sort of a regular service. $10 per month is a pain in the A**, especially for those people, who don’t expect their smartphones to be stolen.

However, if you’re living somewhere remote, where the most threatening person is your next door creepy neighbor, then you better get this application. This app constantly runs in the background (nope, doesn’t slow down your cellphone’s processor) and monitors your activities. In case you’ve forgotten your smartphone or someone snatched it right off your tiny hands, then you can log on to Verizon’s website.

From here on, just send a remote lockdown command to your device and it will be a useless piece of plastic. You can also locate your device’s position through the GPRS tracker. Pretty cool huh?

Google TV to Reveal Its Partners

On Monday Google revealed its content partners for the latest television technology. But among those partners you will not be able to see the three major US networks, such as NBX, ANC and CBS.

With the help of the device, i.e. Google TV the company hopes to increase level of perfection in software and search. Users will be enabled with an opportunity to take advantage of their TV sets so as to watch and find online videos.

Google TV will come with Google’s Chrome browser which means that TV watchers will be able to surf the Internet by means of television screens.

Google signed an agreement with Turner Broadcasting in order users could view such channels as CNN, TNT, as well as Cartoon Network by means of Google TV. Moreover, Google TV will provide HBO programming and it will offer access to content libraries of such video companies as Netflix and Amazon.

After I attended Cisco’s unveiling of its ūmi telepresence system this morning, I hopped in a cab and went to Logitech’s launch event forRevue, its Google TV box. It made for a fascinating comparison.

Cisco’s product, like Apple TV andRoku, is about doing one thing. All there devices compete with Revue, because it does many things:

Like Roku and Apple TV, it’s a way to watch movies and listen to music;
It supports not only services Google has partnered with, such as Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand, but just about any video on the Web;
It attempts to meld Internet video, live broadcast video, and DVR video into one seamless entertainment extravaganza;
It integrates with Dish Network boxes at a deeper level–it can control them and search recorded videos;
It lets you browse Web sorts of all sorts using the built-in Chrome browser;
It uses Logitech’s Harmony technology to let you control all your living-room gizmos;
It offers iOS and Android apps that let you use your smartphone as a remote control;
If you spend $150 for an optional Webcam, it provides ūmi-like HD videoconferencing (although at 720p rather than Cisco’s 1080p);
It’ll let you download and install Android apps (but not until early 2011, when Google makes its TV Android Market available).

Whew. (I’m probably forgetting a capability or two.) Revue costs $299.99, which is 3X the price of Apple TV and 5X the cost of the cheapest Roku, but it does so many things that I think the price isn’t nutty–if it turns out that the many things it does are things people want to do on their TVs. (That’s not a given: In many ways, Revue is a modern take on the idea Microsoft tried to popularize as WebTV a decade and a half ago, and which has fizzled in one form or another ever since. I’m still unclear whether there’s a critical mass of real consumers who want to use the Web on their TVs.)

Revue’s pricetag is also explained in part by its remote control–which, from what I’ve seen so far, is one of my favorite things about the box so far. It’s a wireless, notebook-like keyboard with no-compromises QWERTY. After having experienced a couple of gazillion TV devices that force you to enter text using painful on-screen keyboards, I’m really happy to see Logitech give you the input device you really want as part of the package. (It’s also selling an optional mini-QWERTY keyboard.)

Logitech is releasing a Swiss Army Knife of a product into a market otherwise mostly populated by less versatile kitchen knives. (In the case of Apple TV, which doesn’t yet have a full slate of TV episodes and movies, its sort of a kitchen knife which can only slice cetain kinds of vegetables.) I’m reserving judgment until I get hands-on time with with one, but I like the fact that Revue is so very far from being an Apple TV wannabee–it’s a choice, not an echo, and it’s going to be fun to see which type of Internet TV box consumers gravitate towards. (And of course it’s still not clear whether teeming masses of them will gravitate towards any TV box at all.)

Logitech and Amazon are taking orders for Revue starting today; it’ll show up in stores in two or three weeks. Check out more details on Google TV, including a peek at the interface, at Google’s site.

Attack Of The Grey Buttons: Sony's Google TV remote spotted.. on TV

If you thought that Google TV would make watching the internet on your television as simple as clicking a button, you were half-right. It does involve a button. Actually, 81 of them

Oh, that? Sony's remote control for Google TV. Handy, isn't it?

Pardon? Yes, now that you point it out, it's true to say that all that's missing is the aerial sticking out of the top, and it really would look like a remote control. For a jumbo jet.

Well, don't say that you weren't warned. Google TV was shown off withhuge amounts of razzmatazz but worryingly little detail about how you'd actually operate it.

At the time we noted that

Google's approach does have potential. It has the backing of Sony, which will use Google's software in a new line of TV sets that will appear before Christmas, and users who don't want to buy a new TV will be able to get a Logitech set-top box instead. Also, it will have a head start in apps because it will run Android apps from Google's store and third-party marketplaces.

The problem with trying to do the internet from your television has always been the same one: TV sets have extremely low interaction needs. You have channels and you have sound. And a power button. OK, and often an input selection. If you start adjusting the colour balance and contrast, you are unusual, and you'll do it on average once in the lifetime of the set.

Computers, and the internet, require a lot of interaction. URLs don't type themselves. Many sites, including YouTube, will ask for a username and password, and those are a real pain to enter on any sort of non-QWERTY device. And how do you control a mouse on a screen that's ten feet away?

This seems to be Sony's answer. We count 81 buttons, not including the circular ones at the top and the central buttons. That is a hell of a lot of buttons. Ergonomics? No, next door down.

The URLs and interaction problem is why the documentation for Google TV admitted coyly that "all input devices for Google TV will have QWERTY keyboards" - as we pointed out last month - but also that that "users needs interactions that are fast and easy to do – at a distance, with one hand, in the dark."

Engadget managed to grab this telling picture of the Sony effort when Google TV was featured on ABC's Nightline. Though Engadget is excited about it: "everything you'd need to rock the web and video all at once", it enthuses.

Hmm, well, perhaps. By contrast, let's take a look at the the Sky+ remote, as it does everything - channels, volume, plus control of the hard drive recorder, and so must be the most complicated you can get:

Hmm, 36 buttons plus two rockers. There's the facility to do text entry (via SMS-style keys). More than that, it's got some real human factors design in it: it's a remote designed to be held and brandished at the TV.

Conclusion? This must be a first iteration. Things must surely get better. And also: has Sony completely lost it?

Reporting from San Francisco — Google Inc. on Monday announced partnerships with media and Internet companies that will provide content for its new television service that debuts this month in devices made by Sony Corp. and Logitech International.

Amazon Inc.'s Video on Demand will give Google TV viewers instant access to more than 75,000 movies and TV shows for a fee and Netflix Inc. will make video streaming available.

"One of our goals with Google TV is to finally open up the living room and enable new innovation from content creators, programmers, developers and advertisers," Ambarish Kenghe, developer product manager for Google TV, said in a blog post.

The partnerships are the result of talks with the major TV networks and cable and satellite distributors. Noticeably absent from the Google announcement are ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox. Many media executives are concerned that Google would cannibalize their broadcast businesses.

But Google is forging media partnerships: NBC Universal has teamed with Google TV to create CNBC Real-Time, an application with which viewers can track their favorite stocks and access news feeds on the TV screen; HBO will have programming for subscribers on an enhanced website; and the NBA has built NBA Game Time, an application for viewers to follow game scores in real time and catch up on the latest highlights in high definition.

Google and Hulu confirmed Monday they are in talks to bring Hulu Plus to Google TV. The $9.99 monthly subscription service would enable viewers to watch current shows from ABC, NBC and Fox, whose parent companies all share a stake in Hulu. Hulu Plus also offers an extensive library of content that includes all past seasons of such popular shows as the "X-Files" and "Arrested Development."

Google's television software, which it first announced in May, is being built into new Sony high-definition televisions and Blu-ray players and into Logitech set-top boxes that can be used with television sets. Logitech is planning to discuss the device, called Revue, at a news conference this week in San Francisco.

Sony is expected to roll out its Google TV devices this month. Google has pledged to make the software available to other manufacturers. Analysts say pricing will be a key hurdle. It's not clear that consumers will be willing to pay for new devices in their already cluttered living rooms.

Google is banking that television will be a new venue for it to sell advertising. The company has been meeting with advertising executives to explore ways to sell ads through Google TV.

Apple TV review, with pics

Today's column is a review of Apple TV. Here's a version with a few pictures of the devices mentioned and their remote controls:

With the appropriate level of awe and reverence, I carefully removed Apple's latest magical product from its apple-sized box and marveled at its sleek design.

Within a few minutes, the Apple TV device - a $99 puck that wirelessly connects a TV to the Internet, and became available last week - was streaming video into my living room.

The Apple TV connected to the Wi-Fi network in my house, plugged into the TV with an HDMI cable and, voila, there was a virtual video store on the screen.

Had Apple done it again? Did it revolutionize TV and reveal the future of video entertainment?

No, not really.

Compared with the growing pile of gadgets that already connect TVs to the Internet, the Apple TV is fairly limited. It's the smallest and most stylish of the bunch, but like with a high-heeled shoe, you'll trade some capabilities for those looks.

Apple TV displays a nice interface on the screen. You can search and read about videos you can stream from Netflix (for $9 per month) or buy or rent from iTunes. Apple is trying to get more shows on iTunes, but for now its video selection is more like that of a convenience store than a Blockbuster.

The name is a little confusing. Apple TV isn't a TV at all. It's mostly a wireless adapter.

Unlike a PC - or the Google TV devices launching later this week - the Apple TV doesn't have a browser or the ability to surf and select content from across the Web. Apple TV connects only to a handful of preselected Web services, including YouTube and Flickr. But you'll mostly use it with iTunes and Netflix.

This is not Apple's version of the TiVo. There's no way to connect a TV cable or antenna and no program guide. Apple started down that path in 2007 with the first version of Apple TV, which didn't sell very well.

The new Apple TV is closer to AirTunes, Apple's system for streaming music from a computer to a stereo with a $99 AirPort Wi-Fi adapter. Like AirTunes, AppleTV is a decent solution if you're a heavy iTunes user and want an easy way to connect to your home-entertainment setup.

If you're looking mostly to stream Netflix, you'll want to also look at options such as TiVo, game consoles, Blu-ray players, Wi-Fi adapters or TVs with built-in Internet connections.

Most every "connected TV" device has a standard suite of services, including Netflix, and some let you load more services and applications. In comparison, Apple TV feels like a closed pipe, or a turnstile. It's an alternative to a trip to the video store, but it's nowhere near a replacement for cable or broadcast TV.

More people are getting TV content from the Web, but it's still not mainstream. During the past three months, about a fourth of U.S. consumers downloaded content, including 15 percent downloading to PCs, 6 percent to game consoles, 4 percent to phones and 2 percent to set-top devices such as Blu-ray players or Apple TV units, according to NPD research.

One reason Apple's content is limited is that networks have wised up and are selling first-tier content through their own premium channels. They started the Hulu streaming service, which is offering a $10 premium plan with first-run TV shows this fall, but not on Apple TV.

I'm not too concerned about the TV shows, but I do like being able to stream photos from a computer to the TV. This doesn't work very well on Apple TV, from my experience and that of a bunch of people on Apple's support forums.

I never could get Apple TV to display my photos, even after nearly two hours on the phone with Apple technical support. The device showed photos from Web services like Flickr just fine, but I wanted to see pictures stored on a PC across the room, not on a data center in Quincy.

The support call was escalated to a nice supervisor who had me using the Windows Command line and MSCONFIG to alter the Windows XP PC I was using and disable its anti-malware software.

When that didn't work, he noted he's not really that up on XP (the most widely used PC operating system in the world?) and suggested I disconnect it all and plug the Apple TV directly to my new 802.11n router in the basement with a cable.

He also said the Apple TV wouldn't stream content from the iTunes server on my home server, and only stream from a PC on the network.

After that, I plugged in a similar gadget Sony just released, its $130 Network Media Player. A few seconds after I entered my Wi-Fi password, it found and displayed the content on my server, along with Netflix, a bunch of other services and a "coming soon" spot for Hulu Plus.

Another company, Roku, loaned me one of its new wireless TV adapters, which range from $60 to $100. It's a slightly larger box that does most everything Apple TV does, except Roku doesn't even try to share content on the home network. It's mostly for Netflix.

The Sony and Roku boxes displayed full 1080p content, while Apple TV only does 720p.

But still, the main reason I wouldn't buy an Apple TV is because I can't stand its remote control. It's a 4-inch aluminum wafer with minimalist buttons. You could think of it as the sleek wing from a tiny airplane, but it made me think of a parsimonious slice of Brie, or a shim that fell off a Prius.

The remote doesn't feel nice enough to fondle and fiddle with while watching a show. It's too small to palm and is easy to lose between couch cushions. It's also delicate; within a day in my house it already had little dings marring its case.

But the Apple TV did a perfectly fine job playing a Disney show for my family. Just like the six other devices already connected to my TV.

Logitech's Google TV device: $299, out by Halloween

The first set-top box running Google's new TV software was unveiled today by Logitech, the Swiss peripherals company that also makes Harmony remote controls.

Logitech is taking pre-orders for a $299 kit that includes a wireless keyboard/remote control and a set-top box.

Google TV adds a search bar to the TV screen and a collection of applications through which videos and other content is distributed, similar to the applications available on newer TVs from Panasonic, Samsung, Vizio and others.

Google is working with content providers to develop custom applications for the platform, but what's most notable is that the Google TV software includes a browser for viewing Web pages directly, unlike most new connected TV devices, which funnel everything through applications.

Logitech is the first of several partners rolling out Google TV products. On Oct. 12, Sony will announce new Blu-ray players and TVs with Google TV software built in.

Don't look to Google TV to replace your cable TV service yet. The Logitech device requires you to also have a cable or satellite set-top box with an HDMI connection (or DirectTV service). It also requires a TV with an HDMI input to connect to the Logitech box.

Inside, the box has an Intel Atom processor designed especially for set-top boxes. In a way it's similar to the mininature Atom-powered Media Center PCs from Asus, Lenovo and others that are designed to be mounted on the back of a TV, but those are full-fledged computers that let you load, store and share content.

Logitech's "Revue" device has a USB port for connecting to external hard-drives and devices storing content, and it's DLNA compliant, meaning it should be able to stream music, photos and videos from DLNA media servers on a home network.

Google TV Arrives Via Logitech Revue

Dozens of journalists squeezed into a tiny space in Tribeca Wednesday to witness the launch of Google TV's first progeny: the Logitech Revue with Google TV.

The device aims to solve a difficult problem - bringing together all the content from the Web, local PCs, and TV on the home's biggest screen, the living room TV.

According to Junien Labrousse, executive vice president of products for Logitech, there has "never [been] one solution to bring this all together into one interface, because it's complicated."

Logitech's Google TV incarnation includes a set-top box, remote control/keyboard combination, and a variety of accessories, including a Webcam that'll enable video calling through the device. The keyboard remote control is roughly the size of a full-sized computer keyboard, but adds a touchpad and D-Pad, and fully integrates the Logitech harmony remote technology.

Logitech also unveiled a clamshell-style mini controller that fits in the palm of your hand. It also debuted free Android and iPhone apps that accept voice commands and can control the Revue box and share content directly from the phone to the Revue Google TV device.

Revue will, as promised by Google months ago, bring together the worlds of TV, the Web, and local content. The device is DLNA-compliant and can access music, photos, and videos stored on networked PCs. That content is also, as with everything else in the Google TV environment, searchable.

Perhaps the only surprise of the event was the introduction of video-calling through the Google TV-based device. Logitech has been in the Webcam market for decades and most recently delivered a variety of HD-quality Webcams for the PC.

Logitech Vid HD on Google TV comes pre-installed and works with an external 720p-capbablie Webcam that can be attached to the top of your HDTV. The Webcam also features a Carl Zeiss lens and two microphones. While Revue owners can call each other, any Mac or PC owner running the Logitech Vid HD app can also call Revue devices. Logitech execs said it's a "Plug and play solution." Revue owners can pan and zoom their own image via the remote control's D-Pad.

The Revue will ship with Flash 10.1 support, and version 5 of Google's Chrome browser. Chrome will update just like the dekstop-based browser. It doesn't include any special technology to, say, block pop-ups or protect the user beyond what you'll find in the current version of Chome. Google executives explained that the only difference between the Revue Google TV Chrome browser and the PC's Chrome is that there is less "Chrome" on the Revue browser.

The Revue will come pre-loaded with a variety of apps from, among others, Twitter, Netflix, and Pandora. No Hulu for now, though Logitech executives said Google and Hulu are in talks.

The Revue box and keyboard will list for $299.99. The keyboard alone will cost $99.99 and the mini remote will list for $129.99. The HDTV camera will go on sale for $149.99.

All devices are available for pre-order now on Amazon.com, BestBuy.com, and Logitech.com. Consumers who pre-order a Revue should receive it by month's end, executives said.

Meanwhile, partner Dish Networks, has built the Revue technology in its latest DVR so it can work with the Logitech Revue set-top box. It will not work with, say, a Sony Google TV. The Revue-ready Dish network DVR's ($179) should be ready by the end of this month. Current Dish boxes should be able to accept software upgrades that allow the same pairing.

Give us the right date we deserve

THE MAKER OF SET TOP BOXES for Google's TV service, Logitech has confirmed it will be making an announcement later today.

The INQUIRER spoke to Logitech earlier today and the company confirmed speculation that it will be releasing a statement about Google TV.

While Google has been shouting to anyone willing to listen all about Google TV, its hardware partners have been relatively silent. Sony's Google TV remote got an unexpected outing in the US on ABC's Nightline programme, but the company hasn't made any announcements yet.

Logitech did tell The INQUIRER in May that Google's TV service was due to start slowly rolling out from January 2011 in the UK. It was widely rumoured that you'd be able to get your hands on a Logitech set top box this Autumn. Since then, Logitech has kept mum about when its set top box is coming out. At the time, Google also said you'd see Google TV gear at Best Buy stores in the US from September.

What is for sure is that all parties involved in Google TV are mentioning conflicting dates, especially Google, which can't seem to agree with itself.

The INQURIER reported in September that Google CEO Eric Schmidt said during his keynote speech to the IFA consumer electronics show that the US will get Google TV in October.

However, on the same day, Intel's CEO Paul Otellini pinned the Google TV release timeframe as September for the US.

So we hope Logitech can help clear up all this confusion and give us a definite date.

Logitech unveils its Google TV box

If Google’s TV talk is to be believed, then how we watch the box is going to change. But the box that we watch TV through is also going to change. Here’s the first one compatible with Google TV.

While Logitech couldn’t tell us when the device would be available in New Zealand (it’s due in the US later this year), the company has opened up on what the set-top box will be able to do.

“Revue comes with an easy to set up companion box and an intuitive companion keyboard controller,” says Logitech. “Simply connect your TV, cable or satellite set-top box, and your Internet connection to the Logitech Revue, and you’ve got Google TV. As long as your TV has an HDMI port, you are ready for Google TV.”

Revue is described as a companion to your TV and not a TV itself, so it’ll work with any TV and any HDTV you get in the future with a HDMI port.

The included keyboard is used to find shows, surf the web or turn up the volume. “By combining a compact keyboard, a touchpad, and a remote in a sleek, living room-worthy design, Revue gives you full wireless control over all your entertainment without leaving the couch,” adds Logitech.

You’ll also be able to control Revue with your iPhone or Android smartphone via a software download.

In the US the Revue comes with a choice of fast 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi or Ethernet connectivity, offering high-quality audio and video whether you’re connecting to the internet wirelessly or through a cable.

Google TV Highlighted on Logitech's New Companion Box

Logitech on Wednesday took the wraps off a set-top box called Revue, which will be the first device to bring the highly anticipated Google TV platform to television sets.

The device is a "companion" box, and brings programming and movies from multiple sources including the Internet, broadcast providers, PCs and mobile devices to the large-screen TV, said Junien Labrousse, executive vice president of products at Logitech, during a product launch event in New York.

It comes with Google TV software, which is designed to blend Internet surfing with TV programming. Google announced the Google TV platform to much fanfare in May along with partners Intel, Sony and Logitech. Google at the time said the platform would revolutionize the way people watched television by merging the Internet and TV into a single interface.

Logitech's Revue provides a glimpse into Google TV's capabilities and its promise.

Consumers have access to a vast amount of content including videos, pictures and games from various sources using the box. Google's search capabilities will make it easier to find the right programs from the TV, Internet, digital video recorder or PC. For example, a search for a particular program could render listings from TV channels, YouTube or DVRs.

The device will also run specific applications to stream movies and TV shows from websites like Netflix or Amazon, or to access other Internet services like Twitter. Applications will also allow users to listen to radio from sites like Pandora, check stock prices or read newspapers and magazines from the Internet.

Google earlier this week announced content distribution partners for Google TV, including The New York Times, USA Today, Turner Broadcasting, HBO and the NBA.

Applications from the Android Market will become available next year, opening up the device to many more games, content and applications, Labrousse said.

Users can also watch TV and run an application simultaneously. For example, users will be able to check Twitter messages or sports statistics while watching a TV program. Users also can use the Chrome browser provided within the software to surf the Web.

The home screen provides quick access to applications, podcasts, videos, spotlighted programs and programs currently playing. Within the interface, programming and applications are broken down by category.

An application called Logitech Media Player also allows playback of video or music from home PCs. The device connects to a PC over a Wi-Fi network or Ethernet.

The companion box connects to a TV set or DVR boxes using an HDMI (high-definition multimedia interface) port. The device also ships with a controller that functions as both a remote and keyboard. A smartphone application from Logitech can also convert an iPhone or Android handset into a remote control.

The device also comes with Logitech's Harmony Link technology, allowing the box to talk with and take commands from multiple devices such as home theater systems using infrared technology.

The device will ship for US$299.99, which includes the controller. The device is available for preorder starting on Wednesday, and will start shipping by the end of this month, Labrousse said. It will be available in the U.S. in retail stores like Best Buy and online retailers like Amazon. The company did not immediately comment on worldwide availability.

Logitech is also selling a number of accessories to complement Revue. An optional $149.99 high-definition video camera allows for videoconferencing at a 720p resolution with friends through the TV. The company is also selling a smaller controller for $129.99.

With Revue, Logitech will compete with the likes of Apple, which makes the Apple TV, and Roku, which offers a digital video player that streams content from the Internet to TVs. A number of TV companies such as Samsung also have their eyes set on using the Internet to stream movies and TV shows. Sony has already said it would provide HDTVs and Blu-ray players with Intel's chips and Google TV software built in.

However, the device won't be able to download movies from the Apple TV service. It is also missing support from popular video sites like Hulu.

The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) reports a tipster sent the website details of the USB device configuration list in the new iOS 4.2 beta, which reveals the Apple TV is indeed an iOS device.

Apple made no mention of the change, when Steve Jobs unveiled the cheaper Apple TV on 1 September.

"An entry in iOS 3.2 was referred to as iProd2,1, and we suspected that it was likely an early prototype of a next-gen iPad," Ars Technica's Chris Foresman notes.

"However, an updated configuration file in iOS 4.2b1 reveals the same numeric product ID is attached to an entry for AppleTV2,1, referring to the second major hardware revision of the Apple TV."

Both TUAW and Ars Technica doubt we'll see iPhone style apps running on the new Apple TV anytime soon, due to the lack of onboard storage capacity.

However, being based on iOS, the Apple TV will likely be a target for the jailbreak community, offering potential enhancements and modifications. "If hackers are able to jailbreak the device, there may not be enough room to run custom apps, nor is it clear how those applications would interact with the Apple Remote," TUAW's Steven Sande adds.

Why Apple TV Will Eat Google TV's Lunch

Forget about Google TV. Apple's got five secret weapons that will help it pull the plug on Google TV.

Perhaps you were disappointed with the new look Apple TV when it was introduced one month ago; perhaps you expected more from Steve Jobs' hobby; perhaps you think itseems a little puny in comparison to the Google TV solutions we're hearing so much more about this week. Look a little deeper though and it seems pretty clear Apple's quietly putting together the pieces it needs to outmaneuver its Android enemy. Here's five clues:

1/ Apple TV can run apps
We're definite on this now. Not only has the new product already been jailbroken in order that it can run independently-produced software from jailbreaker developers, but it's possible to install iOS apps on the device -- no jailbreak required.

Developer Steven Troughton-Smith has discovered that apps can be installed, it isn't possible to run them on an Apple TV just yet, as the operating system inside doesn't yet offer a launcher to enable apps to run.

Could this debut in a future software update? I don't know for sure, but it seems an obvious strategy.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has hinted that an App Store for the Apple TV could appear one day, as Business Week puts it:

What Jobs didn't say is that Apple wants to become king of the living room. He tells Bloomberg Businessweek that when the time is right, Apple could open an App Store for the TV that could do for television sets what all those apps have done for the iPhone.

Google TV already offers several integrated apps and the promise of support for many Android early next year.

2/ TV isn't TV anymore
Steve Jobs is honest. He just isn't always easy to understand. Recall when he said he didn't think people really wanted to watch TV on a small iPod screen? Or when he said he wasn't sure of the eBook business? Or when he revealed that Mac OS X ran on Intel machines for five years before the Intel switch was revealed. What was his throwaway comment on television following launch of the new Apple TV?

He told BusinessWeek: "Asked if the iPad could evolve into the TV of tomorrow, Jobs shrugs and says, "That's how I do most of my TV watching today."

Now imagine for a moment that Jobs is using an iPad that's perhaps a little more beta than anybody else. Imagine for example he's actually streaming TV of various kinds to his television from his iPad.

3/ When video out goes wireless
AirPlay is great. When products licensing the technology reach market we'll be looking at a beautifully-connected end-to-end vision for a powerfully-featured digital home at a much lower cost of entry than ever before.

You'll be able to beam music from any iOS device to any AirPlay device (and via an AirPort Express also -- anyone noticed the huge discount on these at Amazon at the moment?)

Recently some clever Apple-watchers claim you can also stream video from an iOS device running AirPlay to the Apple TV. If true, this could be why Mr Jobs is watching his TV using his iPad.

4/ Why Apple TV loves 720p
Many complain the Apple TV won't output video in true high-res video format, its supported resolution is 1,280-x-720, or 720p. Why? Take it to Troughton-Smith once again. He's noticed that the Cocoa-like UIKit development kit already lets developers create apps with 720p video output. It has done so since iOS 4.2. And who uses it? "Mainly those creating TV-out UIs in iPad apps."

"Developers have already started crafting ten-foot-UI experiences in existing iOS apps, so it would be a no-brainer for that to translate over to AppleTV wholesale."

Oh -- one more thing: Apple has already added remote control support into iOS, making it possible to create remote-control driven iOS apps. In other words, apps which run on your TV, controlled by a remote, or (potentially) by an existing iOS device.

5/ Look inside
Inside the Apple TV you'll find 8GB of flash storage, 256MB or RAM and an A4 processor -- the same processor as you'll find inside an iPad, iPhone 4 or iPod touch. Indeed, it's the same amount of RAM as you'll find inside the iPod touch or iPad.

Why is all that power there just to drive Apple's 'Lowtide' Apple TV software?

Apple's made the news today with its decision to pay $1.7 million to a couple for a small house standing in one acre of land, a house that's situated right beside its new billion dollar data center.

That Apple is prepared to pay that much cash just for an acre of land should be enough to convince anybody that the company is engaged in a serious strategic play.

We're looking at big moves into the cloud in Cupertino once that data center is completed at the end of the year. This will likely include progression in Apple's plan for iTunes in the cloud.

Summing up
Turner Broadcasting, NBC Universal and HBO have all developed applications for the Google TV. These networks say they don't want to climb aboard the iTunes bandwagon. But now Apple supports Netflix on Apple TV, it is only a question of time before perhaps it allows broadcasters to offer and profit from their own Apps. Perhaps.

Apple, Google Shoot It Out on the Small Screen

With Apple TV and Google TV, the companies' latest skirmish is taking place in the living room, but they're bringing very different services and ambitions to the television.

Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed off Google TV at the IFA conference in Germany this week, which followed fast on the heels of Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiling the new $99 Apple TV last week.

Looks like another skirmish has broken out between the Silicon Valley behemoths, only this time it's taking place in the living room. But the truth is that Apple and Google won't be going head-to-head, rather they're bringing very different services and ambitions to the television viewing experience.

Google's plan is to unite Internet search and content with premium television content under a single user interface. This will enable a consumer to, say, search for actors, movie titles or television series and receive and watch video results all from the TV.

Google TV, however, is an ambitious plan with little chance of success, says Gartner analyst Van Baker. "For them to achieve their vision, they have to convince people like Comcast, DirecTV or even AT&T to give up their user interface on their set-top boxes to Google and let Google integrate their content with the Google interface and Internet access services," he says. "I don't see that happening."

Baker figures the best Google can hope for is to deliver a side-by-side experience -basically, another remote control for the coffee table to access YouTube and other Internet content. With such a limited service, will consumers want Google TV? "People have been able to get a browser on their television sets for years," Baker says, "yet few people bought it."

Public opinion seems to be on the side of Apple's Jobs, who said last week that consumers "go to their widescreen TVs for entertainment, not to have another computer. This is a hard one for people in the computer industry to understand, but it's really easy for consumers to understand."

While Google vies for the whole pie, Apple has chosen to go after a small slice with its next-gen Apple TV. Literally a quarter of the size of its predecessor, the new Apple TV costs $99 and lacks an internal hard drive. Its sole purpose is to stream movies and television programs rented from iTunes or Netflix, as well as YouTube videos, to a television set.

Apple's well-established ties in the movie business, along with Apple TV's inability to store content thus reducing the piracy threat, resonates with content producers. On the television program front, Apple still has a ways to go because Apple TV only has a couple of networks on board.

Apple TV's tempered approach and low price point should help Apple increase market share in the living room, as opposed to Google TV's lofty goals. But Apple's goals also mean people will still be waiting for the cable guy or satellite dish repairman.

"Is Apple TV's improved value proposition going to take it from a hobby to a mainstream product? Absolutely not," says Baker. "Apple TV is not going to displace cable operators anytime soon."

For Google TV, a Sharp Turn Away From Apple TV

As part of recent a demonstration of Google TV, Eric Schmidt said something that would probably make Steve Jobs cringe.

"Once you have Google television, you're going to be very busy," the chief executive of Google said at the IFA conference in Berlin, according to Wired. "It's going to ruin your evening."

It's not totally clear what Schmidt meant by that statement. The implication, I'm guessing, was that Google TV provides so many entertainment possibilities, users will get lost -- in a good way. Google TV, after all, is meant to be an open door to the Web, with video sites galore, Flash games and, eventually, apps from the Android Market. And it will play nicely with pay TV services, listing cable shows right alongside Web content.

Google TV's approach is the polar opposite of Apple TV, a small, inexpensive set-top box with just a handful of simple features. At $99, Apple TV is quite obviously meant to be the cheapest possible path to iTunes, with access to Netflix, YouTube and Flickr thrown in as bonus incentives. Apps, once rumored for the new device, are absent, and the device exists independently of cable.

There is a Jobs quote that perfectly illustrates the contrast between Google TV and Apple TV, which he uttered last week at Apple's fall press conference: "[Consumers] don't want a computer on their TV," Jobs said. "They have computers. They go to their wide-screen TVs for entertainment, not to have another computer."

Google understands that the vast majority of computer time is spent on the Web, and Google TV is the Web on a television. Therefore, Jobs might as well have said that consumers don't want to have their evenings ruined by a device that acts like a computer on the Web.

Both philosophies have strong and weak points. Jobs may be right that people don't want the complexities of a computer on their televisions, but he's also right that people go to their televisions for entertainment, and Apple TV could offer so much more through its connection to the Web. Google TV promises to offer many of the entertainment sources its rival does not, but loses an element of simplicity by leaving the door to the Web wide open.

Apple 32GB iPhone 4

The Apple iPhone 4 ($199 for the 16GB model and $299 for the 32GB version, with a two-year contract from AT&T) is everything that a new piece of technology should be: It's innovative, attractive, and ahead of its competition. In comparison, previous iPhone upgrades seem inconsequential--that's how much iPhone 4 brings to the table. But two serious design flaws keep it from being perfect. Before there were fixes, we were hesistant to recommend the phone and therefore removed its rating. Now that both of these issues have been addressed and fixed, we have reinstated a rating for the iPhone 4 and put it back on our Top 10 Phones chart.

By now, you've probably heard all about the iPhone 4's poorly placed antenna and dropped data speeds when the phone is held in a certain way. Apple addressed this issue in a press conference on July 16 and offered free cases to iPhone owners as a solution. This fix is a clumsy solution to the problem, but it does fix the dropped calls issue.

Perhaps a bigger issue was the phone's faulty proximity sensor, which caused the phone to activate while you made a phone call. Before the fix, we accidentally sent e-mails with our cheeks, turned on FaceTime and muted the phone while on a call. Fortunately, the iOS 4.1 update, available on September 8, completely fixes the proximity sensor problem.

Premium Design

The iPhone 4's look can be described in one word: stylish. Whereas the iPhone 3GS looks and feels plasticky, the iPhone 4 is svelte and has a premium feel. Surprisingly, it achieves that impression while retaining the same general design, although the edges appear a bit more squared than before.

It's noticeably slimmer than the iPhone 3GS, measuring 0.37 inch deep versus the iPhone 3GS's thickness of 0.48 inch (that translates to 24 percent less). The iPhone 4 is also slightly narrower, 2.31 inches to 2.44 inches. The weight stays the same at 4.8 ounces, but the tweaks to the dimensions make the iPhone 3GS seem almost blocky in comparison. However, it's the aesthetic design touches that make the iPhone 4 an upgrade from the 3GS. The overall design screams elegance--from the rounded, individual volume up and down buttons that replace the plastic volume rocker on the iPhone 3GS to the ring/silent switch and the power/sleep button up top. The face and back are made of glass that is specially treated to withstand scratches and oily fingers, according to Apple. Despite the company's claims, though, I found that both the front and back of my review unit were ridden with fingerprints after only a couple of hours of use.

The side edging is stainless steel, and doubles as the device's three cellular and wireless antennas. At the iPhone 4 launch, Steve Jobs proclaimed that this new design would improve wireless reception. Hooray, we thought--until we heard about its serious design flaw. When you hold a phone, you're sometimes inclined to grip it by its edges. But if you hold the iPhone 4 by its edges, your fingers might block its antennas, thus seriously degrading the wireless connectivity. Senior Editor Mark Sullivan conducted a series of data tests around San Francisco to see how much the connectivity was affected by this, ahem, design fail. In the majority of his tests, he saw dramatic decreases in connectivity. Apple's response to this problem? The company essentially suggests that users not hold the phone in that way.

Gorgeous Display

Of course, the iPhone 4 isn't just about cosmetic enhancements, pleasing as they are. What makes this phone such a technological improvement is what's inside the handset.

Like its predecessor, the iPhone 4 has a 3.5-inch display. But the new phone's screen doubles the resolution to a 960-by-640-pixel IPS display. At 326 pixels per inch, this is the highest resolution available on a phone to date.

That display truly makes a difference. Whereas the iPhone 3GS's text--in the menus, in apps, or on Web pages--appears thick, fuzzy, and undefined, the iPhone 4's text is razor sharp, even when enlarged (as we tried doing when viewing a PDF).

The new "Retina display"--so named because it surpasses the number of pixels that the human retina can process--also greatly improves the sharpness, clarity, and visible detail of images.

In both cases, we'd liken the magnitude of difference to that between a standard-definition 480p DVD and a high-definition 1080p Blu-ray Disc: When you view both on an HDTV, the differences are striking. And once you see them, you can't go back.

The real value of the new display will become evident for people who spend time reading on the iPhone 4. We expect that the display will make reading a more pleasurable experience (although, clearly, limits will remain given the inherently modest screen size--modest, at least, as compared with handsets such as the HTC EVO 4G, which has a 4.3-inch screen, and with the much larger 9.7-inch iPad screen).

iOS 4: Best Features

The iPhone 4 uses Apple's A4 CPU, the same processor powering the Apple iPad. It runs the newly renamed iOS 4 operating system (which the iPad will also use, starting in the fall).

As part of iOS 4, the iPhone 4 gains a bevy of capabilities. One of them--multitasking--is long overdue, but as with the long-awaited cut-and-paste feature, Apple delivers on the promise of making multitasking work smoothly.

You quickly double-tap on the home button to pull up a pane that shows which apps are open. From there, you can swipe horizontally through the apps that the iPhone 4 has retained in either a running or suspended state.

When you find the app you want, you just click on the icon. The app will then resume its activity, and, if written to take advantage of this new feature, it will pick up precisely where you left off. At the very least, reaccessing the app will be faster.

Equally as elegant as multitasking is Apple's implementation of Folders, an increasingly necessary addition. To add icons into a folder, you simply drag one icon on top of another to create the folder, which automatically gets the name of the category those apps share--or, if you prefer, you can rename the folder on the spot. You can pack a maximum of 12 apps within a single folder (giving you three rows of four apps across the home screen). And, thanks to the addition of Folders, you can now add up to a maximum of 2160 apps.

Dramatic Camera Boost

The iPhone 4 brings much-desired camera and video recording advances, as well. The primary camera on the back bumps up from 3 megapixels to 5 megapixels, while retaining the same pixel size (which can further improve image quality). The camera also gains an LED flash, a backlit sensor, and an integrated 5X zoom. The camera now lets you shoot in high-def, at 720p, 30 frames per second; in addition, video gains the tap-to-focus feature already available on the still camera.

PCWorld's testing methodology for the iPhone 4's camera (as well three Android smartphones) was a truncated version of our regular testing methodology for point-and-shoot cameras. We affixed each phone to a tripod and shot two images with the flash turned off:

1. One still-life scene with a color chart and delightful random objects to rate exposure quality and color accuracy.

2. A target chart and printed text to evaluate sharpness and distortion levels.

Here's evidence that megapixel counts rarely matter: Apple's 5-megapixel iPhone 4 beat out the other smartphones we tested for overall image quality, serving up well-exposed, brightly colored images. However, the iPhone 4's image quality did lag behind the competition in two categories, sharpness and visible distortion.

We tested the camcorder capabilities of the iPhone 4 (along with those same three Android smartphones) in the same way we test pocket digital camcorders. Lab Manager Tony Leung recorded a 1-minute video of a toy train and Ferris wheel to gauge several aspects of the video quality: smoothness of motion, color accuracy, and artifacting. We shot the same scene twice, with each device in the same tripod location at its highest video-quality setting--once in bright indoor lighting, and again with the overhead lights turned off and a floor lamp turned on behind the phone. Once we shot all of the footage, our panel of judges rated each clip for its overall quality.

Unfortunately, we didn't get to fully test the front-facing camera, another addition to the iPhone 4. This camera is integral to Apple's FaceTime videophone app, which works only for communicating between two iPhone 4 handsets.

Improved Voice and Data Over AT&T

Bad-sounding and dropped voice calls are one of the biggest gripes of iPhone users here in San Francisco. Fortunately, the iPhone 4's new antenna seemed to improve the experience considerably. In almost all the test calls we placed around the city, calls on the iPhone 4 sounded better than calls on the new Motorola Droid X. Calls sounded more natural, and were more pleasing to listen to on the other end of the line. We recorded no dropped calls on AT&T.

In our informal performance testing in San Francisco, the AT&T-connected iPhone 4 registered an average download speed of 1958 kbps (almost 2 mbps) across our five testing locations in the city. In our head-to-head tests with the Motorola Droid X on Verizon, the iPhone 4 was the clear winner in speed. The two new devices posted similar average upload speeds; the iPhone 4 registered 434 kbps and the Droid X averaged 564 kbps. Those upload speeds are fast enough to support basic file sharing but not enough to make fat-pipe apps such as multiplayer gaming or videoconferencing run well.

iPhone 4: Worth the Upgrade?

The iPhone 4 is a must-have for anyone with an original iPhone or iPhone 3G (the former won't get the iOS 4 upgrade at all, while the 3G won't support some features). And people who have an iPhone 3GS will find this a worthy upgrade, too.

Unlike the previous jump, from the iPhone 3G to the 3GS--which focused on slight performance improvements--the iPhone 4 bolsters the hardware's digital imaging capabilities and its display, making it a comprehensive and measurable upgrade over its predecessor.

But the iPhone 4 isn't the only hot phone this summer--some enticing Android-powered smartphones are out there, as well. If you're fed up with AT&T's service issues or want to try something beyond the Apple universe, check out the HTC EVO 4G on Sprint, the Motorola Droid X on Verizon, and the Samsung Galaxy S phones coming to all four major carriers.

Kodak EasyShare M580: Good Pictures, Ho-Hum Features

If you want a camera that takes great photos and has a larger-than-normal optical zoom range, the 8X-optical-zoom Kodak EasyShare M580 ($170 as of September 20, 2010) fits the bill. It's one of the best point-and-shoot cameras we've tested this year in terms of exposure quality, and it's incredibly easy to use. Its ease of use and sub-$200 price, however, come at the expense of manual controls and exciting in-camera features.

The lens of the 14-megapixel M580 starts at 28mm for wide-angle and zooms all the way up to 224mm at full telephoto. The M580 is completely built for automation, and the camera does a good job of it. The Smart Capture mode identifies the scene automatically and adjusts the camera's settings for the situation. When you attempt to shoot a macro, it automatically turns to the macro scene mode, and in general it's smart enough to choose the best scene mode to handle your shot.

You have 20 scene modes to choose from; they also correspond to the presets that the camera selects from in Smart Capture mode. It's a good thing that the scene-mode selections are so extensive, because you don't get manual control over the aperture or shutter; in Smart Capture mode, shutter speeds range from 8 seconds to 1/1400 of a second. In Program mode, you can manually select ISO settings (from 80 to 1600), exposure compensation steps, and white-balance presets.

One notable in-camera extra is the EasyShare M580's Share button, which tags photos or video for immediate transfer to Facebook, Flickr, Kodak Gallery, YouTube, or an e-mail address as soon as you connect the camera to a computer. It's well implemented for what it is, and it's a nice convenience for snapshooters who like to organize photos for sharing while they're still on the camera. That said, since you still need to connect the camera to your computer in order to make the Share function happen, it won't save much time for most users. Don't expect an immediate wireless upload to the sharing sites of your choice.

Image and Video Quality

In PCWorld Labs subjective evaluations for image quality, the M580 was a standout performer in exposure quality, turning in one of the best scores we've seen this year for a point-and-shoot camera and earning a rating of Superior in that category. Color and sharpness in test images taken with the M580 achieved scores of Good, while distortion levels received a less-impressive score of Fair.

However, when we used the camera while out and about, the M580 tended to suffer from shaky or blurry images. Kodak lists this camera as having "image stabilization" but doesn't specify whether it's optical, mechanical, or digital stabilization. From the looks of the pictures, we're guessing it's digital stabilization, as that's normally the least-effective form of in-camera stabilization.

Although the M580 handles video well, you can't use its optical zoom while shooting. The camera captures 720p high-definition video at 30 frames per second, saved as .MOV files. In PCWorld Labs subjective tests for video, the camera bested most of its pocket-megazoom competition, turning in a video-quality rating of Very Good.

Here are the sample clips we recorded for our subjective video evaluations, under bright light and low light. Select 720p from the drop-down menu in the lower-right corner of each player to see each clip at its highest resolution.

The 3-inch LCD screen on the EasyShare M580 is big and bright enough for you to see and compose shots in sunlight; it's nice to have that big a screen, too, if you use the in-camera Share tagging features. The camera itself is made of a semidurable plastic, weighing around 6 ounces with a battery and SD Card inserted. Considering the camera's dependence on Smart Capture mode, it's surprising how many buttons are present. You'll find four buttons on the top: a power button, a flash button, a still/video selector, and the shutter release. A rocker switch on the back of the camera handles the zoom controls. Also on the back of the camera are five more buttons (delete, menu, information, playback, and the Share button) and a four-way directional pad.

Buying Advice

Although the Kodak EasyShare M580 takes great photos on a tripod and is certainly easy to use, it falls short of more-enticing competitors. Shooting a nice photo is effortless with the Smart Capture mode, but you're going to need a tripod or a flat surface to ensure that your photos don't come out blurry. This is a versatile camera for novice photographers, and it produces great pictures for a budget model, but its ho-hum feature set and not-so-stable stabilization hold it back from earning a full recommendation.

Logitech Revue and Google TV: Prospects and Limitations

An air of mystique has surrounded Google TV, and Logitech’s Google TV device--the Logitech Revue--since they first became public knowledge. On Wednesday, Logitech unveiled the Revue--and we got our first in-depth look at what Google TV can do. And more than halfway through the presentation, I feel as if we have as many questions as answers.

Make no mistake: Today was a Logitech event, not a Google TV event, and what was shown here was centered around the Logitech Revue, which happens to take advantage of Logitech’s Harmony remote control platform. The Harmony platform alone supports more than 5000 brands and 225,000 devices, which means you’ll be able to control your audio-visual peripherals via the Revue system. And with those capabilities enabled in the $300 Revue, it adds to the device’s potential appeal, as opposed to another scenario where, perhaps, the Google TV platform could be integrated into other devices.

However, at $300, Logitech faces a hard sell. After all, the current trend in streaming set-top boxes are to push prices down; to wit the latest Apple TV, Roku XDS, and WD TV Live Plus are all $100 or less. Sure, the Revue price includes one keyboard controller, and can to talk to audio-visual peripherals through cabinets, just as the $350 Harmony 9000 remote. And if you buy the added $150 TV camera peripheral, the Revue has the potential to grow the market to migrate video chat off of the laptop screen, and onto your television screen.

Plug-in Box vs. New TV

Logitech’s approach does make sense to a degree; after all, with some 60 million HDTVs in the market today, consumers who just bought a shiny, new TV in the past five years may not be rushing the gates to get the latest TV features, no matter how much the CE industry might like to think that will be the case. That makes the prospect for a TV with integrated Google TV (Sony will show theirs next week), or a TV with integrated Skype (like Panasonic’s models), less influential in the short term.

But Logitech’s Revue has other limitations. For one, it will only work with HDMI-enabled set-top boxes. OK, sounds modern enough. But wait: That leaves out my Comcast Motorola DVR box and set-top box. And even if those did have HDMI out, the communication would only be one-way, not two-way, as was showcased today in admittedly nifty demos with Logitech’s launch partner, DISH Networks. (That means on ordinary set-top boxes, you can search and access the electronic program guide, but not the search the DVR, for example.)

The trick here, as Logitech president Gerald Quindlen noted, is seamless integration among content. Revue, claims Quindlen, is the “first platform that integrates the Web, broadcast TV, and apps seamlessly. And as the developer community and support grows, the potential for Google TV is unlimited.”

Potential is the key word here. And it’s potential for a new platform, and potential for a product running that platform.

The Google TV Prospect

Conceptually, what Google is up to is very intriguing. Let’s face it: Microsoft has tried, on numerous occasions, to rule the living room, first with its WebTV platform, and later its early set-top box software initiatives. But even with Windows’ domination of PCs everywhere, Microsoft didn’t achieve the scale with those products needed to create a new, viable TV platform that could be adopted widely.

Enter Google. Google TV is built on the Android operating system, and right now, Android is riding a huge crest of growth in the smartphone market, and is poised to make a similar impact in tablets, too. With a vibrant and growing developer community already behind it, Android apps geared for use on an HDTV could make Google TV a star--but for now, Android developers are having enough of a challenge getting content to scale from a phone handset to a 7-inch or 10-inch tablet, let alone scaling up to a 50-inch 1080p television.

Logitech said that its device won’t get the Android Market until early 2011, and the company said it was too early to answer questions about how its device will scale Android apps. Knowing this, I find it too early to declare Google TV a winner just because of the app ecosystem potential.

With what little is known about it right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if it took a year or more for a healthy Google TV app ecosystem to develop.

That you can use your Anrdoid smartphone to control a Google TV device seems enticing, too. There are already hacks and apps to turn a phone handset into a remote; Google TV takes that concept even farther.

In time, I can see Google TV supplementing or replacing the existing, often kludgy and inelegant on-screen interfaces of other devices, such as Blu-ray Disc players, and even network-attached hard drives and existing set-top boxes.

The Logitech Revue Prospect

But without the ability to interact with other devices, as Logitech’s Revue has, Google TV’s prospects appear limited. The core differentiator with Logitech’s Revue will be its ability to interface with other devices on your entertainment shelf. And that’s a capability that other makers will be hard pressed to achieve.

Still, what I saw today from Logitech was less groundbreaking than the hype would have you believe. So many other devices today, from Blu-ray Disc players to set-top boxes to gaming consoles have allowed you to do components of what Logitech has shown here. And the Netflix app shown here was sadly not as competitive as it is on Roku and others; on the Revue you can access your Netflix Instant Queue, but you can't add items to your Instant Queue from your couch.

Even though I’m not buying into the hype, I do see potential. The Revue is DLNA certified, so it should play nicely with other DLNA-certified devices in your living room. It has two USB ports, and those ports will support hard drives and flash drives. And it should work with your NAS box, so if you have a media server, you can stream content from that (but, today, there’s no Apple iTunes server support; but you should be able to access non-DRM-protected content).

Looking Ahead

In the end, what Logitech unveiled is just a beginning. These are baby steps, and early adopters will pay for being first on the bandwagon. Yes, there’s a need for unifying the disparate content sources. The question still remains, though, how well that disparate content can be unified. This may be a tougher challenge than even Google can tackle. After all, even 20 years after reunification, Germany retains some of its long-standing divisions. The chaos in the living room may prove to insurmountable barriers, too.

Logitech unveils first gadget for Google TV

(Reuters) - Logitech International SA showed off on Wednesday its $300 set-top box for the soon-to-be-launched Google TV, the first glimpse of what the Web search giant's holiday-season television-streaming product will look like.

The $299.99 Revue is touted as a way for users to watch both television programs and Web content -- Google has already landed deals with the likes of Time Warner Inc's HBO and News Corp -- on a TV that Japan's Sony Corp will build and sell.

But Colin Gillis, an analyst with BGC Partners, said consumers might balk at the price tag.

"That's a piece of change," Gillis said. "The price point, as Apple has pointed out, for a device like this is about $99. So, it's expensive and yet another box you've got to plug in."

Apple Inc last month unveiled a Web-to-TV device for $99 called Apple TV, which is expected to battle Google TV as well as cable companies for control of the digital living room.

Gillis expects sales of the Logitech Revue to largely be confined to consumers of "cutting edge technology."

Logitech on Wednesday also unveiled other peripheral products for Google TV, including a keyboard controller and a video calling device.

Google Inc has signed content partnership deals with a range of media and Internet companies, including NBC/Universal for CNBC programing and Amazon.com Inc for video-on-demand movie and TV show titles.

Devices powered by Google TV will be launched this month.

Web search king Google is chasing the $70 billion TV advertising market, but the world's most creative and deep-pocketed technology companies such as Microsoft Corp and Apple have struggled to crack the market.

Google TV presents a new outlet for the company's trove of video at social networking website YouTube.com. But the company also faces resistance from media companies, who are concerned that Web-enabled TV could harm their traditional TV business with numerous cable carriers.

Google plays coy on Google TV ads, data

SAN FRANCISCO--Two things Google ordinarily loves talking about, ads and data, were not on the agenda during its Google TV launch party.

Rishi Chandra, lead product manager for Google TV, deflected questions about whether Google intends to run its own advertising alongside ads already shown on regular TV or Web programs running through the Google TV software, introduced today on the Logitech Revue box. Logitech has begun selling Revues for $299, it showed off many of its capabilities during launch events in San Francisco and New York. (Check out CNET's first take).

Chandra confirmed, however, that Google is not planning to put any ads within the Google TV interface quite yet. He wouldn't comment on exactly when that stance might change, proclaiming ignorance of a New York Post report that Google would wait a year before placing ads within the Google TV interface.

It's not hard to imagine Google wanting to pursue such a strategy at some point. Couch potatoes are a sought-after audience, and Google could offer its current search and display advertisers a whole new market, should Google TV prove popular: imagine ads for cooking gear alongside listings for Food Network shows, or ads intended for a male audiences alongside searches for sporting events.

But inundating early Google TV users with ads is probably a bad idea, considering that Google and its partners are going to have to work hard to convince people to spend $299 on a Logitech Google TV box, when competing Internet-on-TV boxes sell for far less. It's hard to imagine that Google won't consider Google TV ads down the road, but for now, it's playing coy.

Another perennial issue with Google is data: how Google collects personal data and how that data is used. Obviously, there's a ton of information about viewing habits, show selection, and Internet sites people like to visit while watching certain shows that product marketers, advertising agencies, and content companies would love to have, and Google's software is in a position to track every piece of content viewed using the software, including when and how it was consumed.

Chandra said Google plans to release a privacy policy attached to Google TV shortly, which will detail what kind of information the company will collect and how that will be shared with partners. It wasn't clear if Google TV would get its own place on the Google Dashboard, or whether Google TV would somehow be connected with one's global Google account.

SEATTLE — Logitech is unveiling a $300 set-top box that will bring Google's new TV service to people who don't want to buy a new television set.

Logitech International SA, which makes computer mice, webcams and other peripherals, said in May it would build a Google TV set-top box.

Google Inc.'s Google TV aims to wed Web content with traditional TV programming. The service will include programs from Time Warner Inc.'s TBS, TNT, CNN and HBO and others, as well as Internet video services operated by Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc.

The first Google TV sets from Sony Corp. are expected to go on sale later this month. Logitech says its devices will be on sale then, too.

Logitech is based in Switzerland.

Logitech Revue + Google TV = Trojan horse PC in your living room

Logitech has built a very large business making everything for the computer except the computer itself: keyboards, mice, desktop speakers, etc.

Today Logitech launched its Revue, a set-top box containing its version of Google TV plus a remote control that looks like a regular Qwerty keyboard with a few extra buttons.

Using a search interface, Revue is connected to your living room TV and uses your wireless or wired network to bring TV content from web sources and it is integrated with your cable TV box.

It’s not designed for your mom to use, thats for sure but if you are already a Logitech Harmony remote user you can master Revue.

What struck me is that all of the the web side of the content equation is already available to you through your laptop. I cut my cable TV off more than two years ago and use a spare laptop to stream TV content from dozens of Internet sources. With Revue you don’t need a laptop, it’s essentially a PC (Intel Atom inside) with a Google OS: Android; with a Chrome web browser.

You might use it for TV but you could also use it for running apps and many of the things you do with a laptop and browser.

One way of looking at this is that Google TV turns your TV into a Google PC. And no Microsoft required…

How To Get To Mandalay Bay

You’ve registered for BlogWorld and you’ve got your plane ticket to Las Vegas … but have you figured out how you’re going to get to Mandalay Bay once you’ve arrived in Sin City?

You have options when it comes totransportation in Las Vegas, and it doesn’t have to break the bank. After all, you’ll want to save your pennies for the few spare minutes you have on the casino floor!

Luckily for you, Mandalay Bay is one of the resorts on the Las Vegas Strip that is closest to McCarran International Airport. It shouldn’t take you long to get from the airport to the resort, but unfortunately some of your transportation options offer simple flat-rate fees to get from the airport to any resort on the Strip. Nonetheless, once you arrive at the airport, there are a number of ways that you can get to Mandalay Bay:

Airport shuttles – Located outside the doors near the baggage claim area, the city’s airport shuttles often run 24 hours a day and just a few run with limited service throughout the night. Most shuttles charge between $6.00 and $12.00 to hotels on the Strip. If you are staying in Mandalay Bay, you should be paying on the low end of that scale.
Public buses – Two of the city’s public bus routes stop by the airport, but neither of these routes runs directly by Mandalay Bay. If you’ll be hauling luggage with you, I’d advise that you avoid taking the public bus to your hotel. The exchanges could be a hassle and it won’t save you enough money to make this option worthwhile.
Taxis – Las Vegas has a ridiculous number of taxis, and you shouldn’t have any problem catching one at the airport. This helpful chart, created by the Nevada Taxi Cab Authority, explains how much you can expect to pay if you go by cab by breaking down all of the fees. Don’t forget that a McCarran airport fee of $1.80 applies to your ride.
• Rental cars –Renting a car in Las Vegas can be pricey and isn’t really necessary if you only have plans to stay on the Strip. It’s easy to get around Las Vegas Boulevard by monorail, bus and foot (there are even public buses that run to the downtown attractions). If you want to take a day trip before or after BlogWorld to any of the national parks near Las Vegas or even spend an afternoon at Red Rock Canyon then the convenience of having your own wheels might outweigh the price you’ll pay.
Limos – It’s not the cheapest way to get from the airport to Mandalay Bay, but if you want to start your trip in Las Vegas with style, then this is the way to go. Limo rentals are usually done by the hour, starting at around $40.00/hour, so if you are arriving with several people with whom you can split the cost, this might be a fun and affordable option.

Have you considered Incorporating of Forming an LLC for your blog?

Maybe you started a blog on high desert gardening, or one on micro-brews of the Pacific Northwest, first-time parenting, iPhone apps, small businesses, salt water aquariums. You’ve logged long hours behind the glare of your computer display, fought writer’s block, and tried not to get rattled by the occasional negative comment. Along the way, you’ve produced some really great content.

What may have begun as a casual interest has turned into an extra source of income, or even a full-time business. Most bloggers start off as a sole proprietorship (or in reality, many bloggers don’t even consider a business structure at the beginning). Now and then you might wonder if it’s time to incorporate, but it’s an easy question to procrastinate about-after all, organizing next week’s topics is a more pressing matter.

So when, or why, should you consider Incorporating or Forming an LLC?

Is your blog making money? Do you earn your living online?
If your blog is generating significant revenue through ad networks, private sales or anything else, it’s time to consider whether you can improve your tax situation by Incorporating. If your marginal tax rate (of all your combined personal income) is higher than the corporate tax rate, this is a no brainer. In addition, Corporations may be entitled to additional deductions not available to individuals. Of course, you should consult with a CPA or tax advisor on your own particular situation – and just remember, each month you delay may be costing you in extra taxes.

And speaking of taxes, WebCPA reported that the IRS intends to increase audits on sole proprietors (and IRS statistics already indicate that the risk of an audit is greater if you operate your business as a sole proprietor).

Do you have liability concerns?
It’s hard to imagine that sitting behind your computer puts you at any real risk of a lawsuit. While running a blog is inherently a less risky business than running a day care center or plastic surgery office, there are some liability implications for bloggers.

For example, what if you unintentionally plagiarize someone’s work? Find yourself accused of slander? Or maybe you end up writing about a mobile prototype left in a bar? What if your major advertiser fails to pay, making it impossible for you to pay your own vendors, like any freelance writers under contract?

I’m not a fan of scare tactics, but I am a fan of education. Certainly these are worst-case scenarios, and you’ll most likely never run into these sort of problems. However, if you’re sued as a sole proprietor, you’ll be sued personally. This means that your personal assets are all at risk. And what was once an interesting side project or a form of self-expression can end up wiping out your retirement savings or child’s college fund.

The bottom line is that Incorporation can be pretty painless and affordable. For those of you who cringe at the thought of paperwork, the LLC (Limited Liability Company) offers the legal protection of a Corporation, with minimal formality.

Whether you stay a sole proprietor or Form an LLC or Corporation, be sure to keep your personal and business finances separate; set up a business checking account and possibly a business credit card. LLCs and Corporations are required by law to maintain official business accounts. A sharp line between you and your business can benefit the sole proprietor too. It’s easier to organize (and justify) deductions at tax time. And in the case of an audit, it may prevent the IRS from looking at your personal finances.

The Blog Job Conundrum

Blogging can cause quite a conundrum for some. Ok, who am I kidding? For most of us, there’s a very real problem that we’re all internally trying to solve when it comes to blogging for dollars.

Earlier this week, I posted my weekly Overheard on #Blogchat update, this time highlighting some tweets made by Brian Clark, the guest co-host. The comments he made that I expanded upon were regarding the need to have an overall goal for your blog. Daria of Mom in Management posted an interesting reply:

Those were the most helpful tweets that I got out of #blogchat also. I am struggling with identifying my goal however. I think partly because I would like to have my blog be a journal of sorts too… I suppose this means that I need to start another blog if I actually want to make money. Then it seems like a job though.
Any thoughts on how to narrow my focus down and yet keep it from feeling like a job?

Ah, and there is the core problem that most of us face, and one of the major reasons so many bloggers never make a livable income with their blogs. You started your blog to get away from having a 9-to-5, grind-you-down blog. Yet, a blog that’s truly treated as a business will require more hours of work than any office job ever will.

You can disregard this, say that it is all about passion and doing what you live, that these things keep it from feeling like work. I can tell you that I 100% agree that you should have a passion for your blog’s topic. I certainly have a passion for the niches in which I blog.

But I’ll let you in on a secret. Come closer. Closer.

*whispers* Most days, it still feels like work.

That’s because it is work. Anything that makes you money is work, no matter how much you love what you’re doing. And, at the end of the day, even if you absolutely love your job, having responsibility means that you’re sometimes going to feel like that job is an obligation.

The Blog Job Conundrum is that we want to what we love as a job, but when something becomes a job, it is easy to stop loving it. Perhaps I should call it the Blog Job Catch-22. And darn it, it makes me just want to stomp my feet. Blogging is supposed to make you happy, isn’t it?!?!

I don’t think there’s an easy solution to this, or even a solution that will work for everyone. Heck, I’m not sure that any one rationalization, justification, or explanation would work for mostpeople. I think it’s something that each blogger has to work through internally.

But, because I’m a loud-mouth who likes to chat, I’ll share with you my personal thoughts on the great Blog Job Conundrum. So here goes:

I’m OK with not loving my job.

Let me back up a minute and say that I do love blogging. I’m passionate about the topics I cover, and I enjoy most of the tasks associated with blogging. But, I’m ok with not loving every secondof my blogging job.

A famous chef like Bobby Flay will tell you that there are days he orders take out because he doesn’t want to cook, even though he loves cooking. A famous musician like Kanye West will tell you that he sometimes wants to veg in front of the television instead of going to the studio, even though music is the love of his life.

My point is that there are moments when everyone dislikes their job. Blogging isn’t any different, and that’s OK for me because I’ve found that the good feelings I get from blogging vastly outweigh the bad feelings. Those bad feelings that come from obligation are what has made blogging go from hobby to profession for me. It’s a sacrifice I’m willing to make.

After all, I’m not just a blogger. It’s interesting to me that so many people identify as their job. “I am a nurse” instead of “I work as a nurse.” Sometimes, for me, it’s important to step back and say, no, I’m not a blogger. I work as a blogger. In reality, I’m so much more than just a blogger. I like to play the piano. I like to camp. I’m a sister and daughter and roomate. And yes, ok, I am a blogger too. That’s just one piece though.

It’s kind of like parenting. The vast majority of parents love their kids. They wouldn’t give up being a parent for the world. Do they like every second of it? No way. I do not know a single parent who doesn’t have days when they just wish their kids would poof out of existence for awhile so they can have some time alone. That doesn’t mean that you don’t love your kids.

My advice to anyone dealing with the Blog Job Conundrum is to do what you can to create the most perfect environment possible. Choose a topic that you’re passionate about. Connect with people who care. Cover topics that are important to you. Design a blog that visually makes you happy.

And don’t sweat the moments when you hate it. If blogging really is the right career choice for you, the good moments will exceed the bad.

The Importance of Filling Out Feedback Forms

If you’re attending one of our many educational sessions, a volunteer will hand you a form upon entering. This form will ask you a few questions about what you thought of the session and the speaker. Though we ask attendees to fill out these forms each year, the truth is, not enough people do. That’s why I’m writing this post. When we ask for feedback, we’re not just being polite. Your comments and observations help us to plan future events.

Here’s why it’s important to us:

We can’t attend all the sessions: We can’t see how all the speakers do. We don’t know if a speaker, despite us warning him or her not to, will make sales pitch. We don’t know if someone is laugh out loud funny or so dull you all fall asleep. We don’t know who went on and beyond and who could have put some effort into it. Your feedback is essential to BlogWorld’s success. If you don’t tell us, we can’t give you what you want.
It tells us what we did right…and wrong: We hope we put together a good conference. After all, we worked on it almost the whole year. Unless you tell us what needs improvement and where we succeeded, we can only guess.
It helps us to plan future events: Knowing the most popular sessions and speakers helps us to see who to invite back in the future, and what kind of sessions interest you most. Knowing your interests also helps us to plan other non-session related activities.
Save a tree: If you are handed a feedback form and don’t fill it out, it’s a waste of paper. Do your part for the environment by filling in your form!
All feedback is good feedback: Everything you can tell us about BlogWorld is valuable. Please share.

Cartoon: My card. Oh, no, wait…

I’m as guilty of this as anyone. You meet someone at a conference, you find a real connection – be it personal or business-related – and you exchange cards.

But as you hand yours over, you yank it back. “Oh, sorry,” you say, and fumble for a pen – “I just changed cell numbers. Let me just write in the new one… Hmm, you can’t really read that, can you?” (Of course they can’t, because you’re trying to write it on a little card with a big thick Sharpie, the only thing you could find in your bag.) “Do you have a pen? Or just some pointed instrument I could use to draw some blood?”

So if your business cards are out of date, set aside some time today to get some new ones printed in time for BlogWorld. (I promise: I’m doing just that as soon as I finish writing this.)

And if you want to stand out a little, here are a few ideas for business cards that make sense in for a social media conference:

Chris Brogan goes with a minimal card, giving only his preferred means of contact, along with his name, how he thinks he could help you, and – maybe most critically – space to write things on. He also has a business card on his site.

Maybe you want to join the cool kids and have a QR code on your card. (I’m using a distinctly self-serving definition of “cool” here, I’ll admit.) To link to the contact page on your blog, just use Google’s URL shortener, goo.gl. It not only spits out a handy shortened URL, but a QR code to boot. (This is what my cartoon’s link looks like.) (And for a rundown on how people used QR codes at SXSW this year, have a look at Gina Trapani’s report.)
You could always just go completely paper-free with a service like card.ly or chi.mp, which create attractive-looking single-page sites with your contact details and social media links.
And if you have an iPhone or Android, you’re going to want to be able to Bump. It doesn’t get more fumble-free than that.

Promote Your Company on Facebook Like a Superstar

Facebook success doesn’t just happen because you have an attractive profile. Sometimes companies can fail because of the inability to maintain a page in a way that keeps the like base continuously interested in the page. Follow the steps below and you’ll be on the way to making your Company Facebook Page a superstar!

First you may want to ask yourself what is the purpose of your Facebook page. Does it inform people about news involving your company, does it serve as a portal for special deals available only to your like base, or is it a way to communicate with your customers? This decision will determine the tone of voice you will be using for your posts. If the posts are conflicting with the reason people visit your site, you may quickly loose your followers attention. There is no right way to do this. The decision is usually based off who your target audience is, and what you believe they will respond to.

It is a good rule of thumb to decide how many posts a week you want to put out. Remember that the Facebook community tends to be picky about who they like, with the average number of users only liking around 80 companies (Press Room Statistics, 2010) (compared to Twitter where the average number of Companies people follow is around 346 (Twitter Counter Statistics, 2010)). Knowing this, people that like your Company Facebook Page are more likely to receive your updates than your followers on Twitter would be, so courtesy suggests you send out around 1-2 posts a week. This number will keep your like base interested in your content without overpopulating their news feed.

To keep track of your posts you could set up a schedule that lists out what you want to post and when you want to post it. This will ensure first, that you have enough content to make your posts worthwhile, and second, that you are sending them out at an acceptable rate.

Once you have sent out your posts, it is always a good idea to re-evaluate. Look back at your wall; were your posts received well? Did your posts have feedback or customer interaction? Most importantly did your posts achieve the goal you set for your Facebook Fan Page when you first started? If they did, congratulations! Keep up the good posts.

If your posts made little to no impact on your page, it may be time to change up your strategy. This could mean changing the tone of your messages or changing the reasoning for the page. When I visit a blog I am almost always immediately drawn to any multimedia content that is on the blog. I’m a fan of bloggers who create not only photo content, video content but also audio content. There are a ton of tools online that you can use to to put your content online. There are also a ton of tools that you can use offline to create this sort of content.

The main thing for me is that your content be your own. Sure you can pull photos and videos from Flickr or Youtube that are legitimate to use through creative commons. I even put creative commons on my photos so that other people can use them if they wanted to. I make my Photo-A-Day available on my blog so that anyone can grab the code and post it on their blog and the new photo gets automatically served each day. The content is mine and I’m free to distribute as I wish.

Creating my own multimedia content is very important to me. I have been taking and posting photos on my blog every single day for 5 straight years. People sort of marvel at that commitment and I wonder why. To me, taking photos is a natural extension of who I am as a person. This endeavor started as a challenge to myself to take photos and document a year in my life. I turned 31 and started my journey. When I turned 32 I was completely hooked on taking a daily photo so one year turned into five. Just the other day I passed 2000 straight days of posting photos and blogging about them.

Content that you create is also a powerful way to let your readers get to know who you are and what you stand for. When I do video reviews I often do them in one take where I do not write anything ahead of time because I want the reader to see my authentic reactions to what I am reviewing. Being unpolished, especially when talking authentically is a powerful thing and people can spot a liar.

The latest thing that I have gotten into is creating audio content in the form of a podcast. I am a co-host of Geek Dads Weekly and through that I can pop on a pair of headphones, fire up Skype and audacity and record to my heart’s content. There isn’t anything tremendously fancy needed to get started making your own multimedia content. My session will help you get started in the world of Audio, Video and Photo content creation.

How to Blog with a “Roommate”

Having a roommate is tough. On July 1, I moved in with my best friend, and even though we have similar hobbies, share a need for privacy, and fully respect one another and our space needs, we still get frustrated with one another at times. It’s bound to happen, no matter how much you like your roommate. Even spouses fight sometimes.

A blog is kind of like a home for many people. It’s a safe space where you can say what’s on your mind, connect with other people, and feel comfortable. So, moving in with a blogging “roommate” is tough. That is, it’s hard to be part of a blog with multiple authors.

Sometimes, having a blog with multiple authors just makes sense. Maybe you want to build a business, but your knowledge is limited in certain areas of your niche. Maybe in your niche, multiple perspectives on a topic don’t just add value, but are nearly necessary. Maybe your niche is so news-centric that one person can’t possible cover it all. Maybe you have great ideas but aren’t the best writer. Multiple bloggers on a single blog can make a lot of sense for some people.

The problem is that when you have multiple bloggers, you have multiple viewpoints, and these view points don’t always line up. Arguments happen. Feelings get hurt. I’ve seen blogs destroyed because partners can’t agree.And I understand that, because a blog isn’t just personal, but also a source of income. It’s hard to get on board with a decision if you don’t agree and think it will compromise your message or cause you to lose money.

It doesn’t have to be that way. I blog with multiple people here at this blog, and I also blog with multiple writers at Binge Gamer. In both places, it’s working out pretty well, and I think that’s the case because of policies we have in place. If you’re going to blog with a roommate, here are some tips to help you make it work:

Set clear job duties. Who’s in charge of what on the blog? Who has final say on blog issues? How will the work be split between people if there are multiple owners? Give yourself job titles and clear tasks, so there’s never a question as to who handles what.
Discuss profit. You might not be making money right now, but when you do, who gets a cut? Will you split it, and if so, will you do so evenly? Will one person own the blog and pay everyone else? Who gets to make decisions about how money is spent on the site for things like hosting, themes, etc.? Money is important, so discuss it early.
Compromise. I can’t stress enough how important it is for you to compromise. Yes, standing up for your point of view is honorable, but like I’ve said here in the past, compromise makes the world go ’round. If you’re a stubborn person, blogging with others may not be a good choice.
Hold one another accountable. If you both say that you’re going to write x number of posts or bring in a certain number of advertisers or otherwise do a certain amount of work, make sure you’re holding one another accountable. If you let things slide one week, it’s easy to continue to let them slide until one equal partner is putting in a lot more work that the other.
Sign a contract with one another. There’s a saying that you should never do business with friends. I don’t necessarily agree with that, but what I think you should take away from that quote is that you should never treat a business like a friendship. As soon as you decide to work together, sign a contract that covers what you’ve determined, especially in terms of amount of work and money.

Sometimes, it doesn’t work to blog together. If you can’t make it work, go your separate ways amicably. It isn’t worth ruining a friendship, especially because you could network with one another in the future. Just because it doesn’t work to blog together doesn’t mean that you can never work together or associate with one another in any way.

The Secret About Secret Posts

Shhh…I have a secret. Come closer so I can tell you. Closer. Closer.

Well, to be honest, this is text not spoken word, so it isn’t like you actually have to come closer. Unless you have bad eyesight. That’s right, I have a big secret, and I’m going to share it on my blog. And it’s going to drive traffic. And it’s going to create a stir. It might even go viral.

We’ve all seen them – posts that share secrets. They’re usually titled “X Number of Secrets About…” or “The Secret to…” or something similar. You aren’t alone if you click on links to these titles. In fact, you probably have clicked on the title to this post to read it because of the title. Why?

Because secrets are juicy. More than that, I think it’s because we don’t want to feel like we’re left out. If everyone else knows some kind of awesome secret, we don’t want to be the sucker who has no idea what’s going on.

So we click…and nine times out of ten, we’re disappointed. Why? Because secret posts aren’t really “secrets.” They’re just tips. Often, they’re not even new tips – they’re rehashed tips we’ve seen before, collections of tips that the blogger him/herself has already posted, or tips that aren’t really tips at all, but rather common sense. We’ve fallen into their click-trap because everyone once in a great while, someone actually does post some kind of secret, or at least a really good tip that we’ve never considered.

I’m not saying that you should stop posting “secret” posts – but please, for the love of blog, when you make the promise that you’re going to post a secret, deliver. If you don’t make good on your promise, I’m going to wrinkle my nose and click the back button. Next time, I probably won’t believe you, and like the boy who cried wolf, when you really do have a great idea that you want to share, people won’t be as likely to click through.

So how do you do a real “secret” post?

Identify a problem in your niche.
Brainstorm solutions.
Test your solutions to find out what works and what does not.
Share your findings.

The key here is to come up with something original that hasn’t been done before. It’s only a secret if it’s something that only you know. Come up with something new and share it on your blog. people are hungry for secrets. Secrets really can drive traffic, and if you share something amazing with people that they haven’t heard anywhere else, they will be back to read more.

This post breaks my own rules, so to speak – I hope most of you already realize that most “secret” posts aren’t actually secrets. I just wanted to make a point. Why did you click on this post title? Are you disappointed that it doesn’t actually contain some kind of secret?

1. Click on "Start" in the bottom left hand corner of screen

3. Type in "command" and hit ok

You should now be on a screen with something titled "Local Area Connection", orsomething close to that, and, if you have a network hooked up, all of your other networks.

8. Right click on "Local Area Connection" and click "properties"

9. Double-click on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" from the list under the "General" tab

10. Click on "Use the following IP address" under the "General" tab

11. Create an IP address (It doesn't matter what it is. I just type 1 and 2 until i fill the area up).

12. Press "Tab" and it should automatically fill in the "Subnet Mask" section with default numbers.

13. Hit the "Ok" button here

14. Hit the "Ok" button again

You should now be back to the "Local Area Connection" screen.

15. Right-click back on "Local Area Connection" and go to properties again.

16. Go back to the "TCP/IP" settings

17. This time, select "Obtain an IP address automatically"

Although its name suggests perhaps even grander capabilities, Windowsenthusiasts are excited over the discovery of a hidden "GodMode" feature that lets users access all of the operating system's control panels from within a single folder.

By creating a new folder in Windows 7 and renaming it with a certain text string at the end, users are able to have a single place to do everything from changing the look of the mouse pointer to making a new hard-drive partition.

The trick is also said to work in Windows Vista, although some are warning that although it works fine in 32-bit versions of Vista, it can cause 64-bit versions of that operating system to crash.

To enter "GodMode," one need only create a new folder and then rename thefolder to the following:

The Mass Payment file upload is straightforward and easy to use. It’s simple to add a generic subject and body to the email sent with all payments. Note that it’s also possible to use the PayPal API to send Mass Payments, so if you’re a larger company (or you just prefer automation) there’s that option available to you as well.

Mass Payments are processed instantly and available for recipients to use or withdraw immediately.

A word of caution: Ensure your recipient is trustworthy and has fulfilled their service or delivered their goods because PayPal Mass Payments can’t be cancelled.

If the recipient has a personal PayPal account in the same country as the sender (and the sender is not using a credit or debit card to make the payment), sending paymentsto them is free the regular way.
